2026 Japan Ninja Day (忍者の日)
Ninja were a special occupational group in Japan that emerged from the Kamakura period to the Edo period (approximately 1185–1867), performing roles similar to modern-day spies and intelligence agents. The main schools of ninjutsu were centered in Iga (northwestern Mie Prefecture) and Kōka (southern Shiga Prefecture). These regions have long promoted themselves as the birthplace of the ninja, making it a major tourist attraction. Because of this cultural significance, the tourist associations of Kōka City and Iga City jointly applied to the Japan Anniversary Association. Starting in 2015, February 22 of each year was officially designated as “Ninja Day.” The date was chosen because the Japanese pronunciation of “2” (ni) sounds similar to “nin” in ninja. On this day, public officials dress up as ninja, and various ninja-themed events and celebrations are held for both locals and visitors to enjoy. Every February 22, Kōka City in Shiga Prefecture and Iga City in Mie Prefecture celebrate Ninja Day with various fun events. In these towns, local officials even dress up as ninja for work, and a special Ninja Assembly takes place, making the day a unique experience for everyone.
