April Fool's Day originated in France. In 1564, King (Charles IX)of France adopted a new calendar, moving New Year's Day from April 1st to January 1st. Since the old calendar had been in use for so long, people struggled to adjust. On April 1st, some continued celebrating the New Year, and others humorously gave "fake New Year gifts," teasing those who hadn’t adapted. This gradually evolved into April Fool's Day. The most common "fake gift" was food, especially fish. Why? As Christians abstained from meat during Lent(carême) but could eat fish. The tradition of "April fish" continues today, now symbolized by paper fish.
