Junior high school advancement: international exchange student
by Yang Ming High School Director Of Academic Affairs Hu Chieh-ming

To encourage high school and vocational school students to participate in international exchanges, Taipei Department of Education provides an international exchange program every year. The purpose of the program is to develop students’ global perspectives, have a deeper understanding of foreign cultures, and cultivate international talents that have a strong national identity and a sense of responsibility to the global community. The exchange program is looking for twenty-five 9th and 10th grade students studying in Taipei City’s public or private schools to attend public high schools in Campbell River City, British Columbia, Canada, and public high schools in the US for a year. The selection criteria include students’ school grades, and students’ English ability should above the level equivalent to the Intermediate level of the General English Proficiency Test.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, exchange students for the 2020 academic year will not go to their exchange schools until 2021. Details of the 2022 academic exchange program are not yet determined, and will be adjusted depending on the pandemic situation. We recommend students that are interesting in the this type of exchange programs to pay attention to the latest information from the Taipei Department of Education after the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down.

Besides applying for the exchange student program and study abroad during high school, universities also offers many opportunities for students to study overseas. Taiwan has many universities that partnered up with international universities in joint degrees.  Take Fu Jen Catholic University for example, Fu Jen Catholic University has partnered up with 31 schools in countries including the US, Germany, and Spain. The University of Taipei has partnered with 5 schools from the US, the UK, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan. Through the program, students can save time and money while achieving the dream of studying abroad and earn a joint degree.
