April 30 is Netherlands King’s Day (Koninginnedag), it is one of the most important holidays for the Dutch. In the 19th century, as a means of promoting Dutch national unity, Princess Wilhelmina’s birthday was proposed to be observed as a holiday. In 1980, Queen Beatrix ascended to the throne, to honor her mother Juliana, the new queen decided to keep the holiday on April 30. Since then, April 30 became the official national holiday of Koninginnedag. Every year on this day, the streets of the Netherlands are filled with Dutch flags and orange flags that represents the royal family, parades, music festivals, and various flea markets. On Koninginnedag, the whole Netherlands is a festival.
