February 2022 - Vietnamese Lunar New Year
The Vietnamese New Year is celebrated on the same day as the Lunar New Year in Taiwan, though the customs are different in many ways. The most well-known custom in Vietnam is the tradition of eating sticky rice dumplings during the New Year. In fact, the custom of eating sticky rice dumplings is also popular in Guangxi, Sichuan and other regions in China. The Vietnamese sticky rice dumplings are not in the shape of triangle that we are familiar with, and the shape may vary in different parts of Vietnam. Square- or cylinder-shaped sticky rice dumplings are most commonly seen, usually stuffed with mung beans, pork and other ingredients.
In addition to food custom, flower display during the festival is also different. Orchids, silver willows are commonly seen during Chinese New Year in Taiwan, while in Vietnam, peach blossoms and apricot flowers are widely used as decorations. Peach blossoms are considered as a symbol of luck and apricot flowers are seen as a symbol of prosperity.
Chinese New Year in Taiwan is normally celebrated with firecrackers. However, in Vietnam, it is illegal to set firecrackers, so the government would arrange firework displays instead. Watching firework displays has become one of the main family activities for the Vietnamese during the Spring Festival!
