How to Help Children Manage Their Emotions

by Wang Pei-ling, Director Of Counseling, Guting Junior High School

Emotional management refers to a person's ability to grasp and utilize emotions to achieve their goals, as well as control or regulate their emotions so that they do not affect their learning and quality of life.

Children that are emotional stable typically exhibit the following characteristics:

1. Less emotional fluctuations: Individuals with effective emotional management can control their emotions more easily and handle difficulties that arise in their lives and studies more effectively.

2. Regularity in daily routines: They usually have good time management and adhere to a consistent schedule, including stable sleeping and resting times, balanced diet, and exercise.

3. Stable interpersonal relationships: They have better interaction with others and can establish good relationships with parents, teachers, and classmates. This helps them develop essential skills in getting along with others.

4. Develop self-awareness: They understand their emotional needs, desires, and preferences, have clear goals and beliefs, and can have a more definite plan for the future.

From a teacher's perspective, here are some suggestions for helping students manage their emotions:

1. Foster self-awareness: Students need to understand their emotional states, recognize physical and emotional reactions, and employ appropriate strategies to alleviate discomfort.

2. Teach students how to express their emotion: Encourage students to express their feelings intuitively, learn how to articulate emotions, and seek support and assistance.

3. Cultivate a positive attitude: Foster positive thinking and proactive actions in students, enabling them to utilize their resources and abilities to effectively navigate various emotional difficulties.

4. Encourage social interaction: Students should learn how to build relationships with peers and others, acquire skills for problem-solving and conflict resolution, and develop the ability to share their emotions and feelings.

5. Learn emotional shifting: Students should learn how to move away from distress and anxiety by shifting towards positive activities and experiences, in order to balance negative emotions.

On the family front, parents can contribute to children's emotional stability by providing a supportive living environment, fostering stable family relationships, offering positive encouragement and support, establishing emotional connections, and helping children develop good life habits and emotional management skills. This enables children to better adapt to challenges in their learning and daily lives.

When children are in a bad mood, parents can help provide emotional relief and engage in interaction. Here are some suggestions:

1. Listen to your child: Begin by actively listening to your child's emotional expressions, allowing them to feel understood, and then engage in emotional interaction with them.

2. Emotional expression: Parents should learn to express their emotions and share their family experiences and attitudes, allowing children to learn and understand how to express their emotions and deal with negative emotions more effectively.

3. Help children learn emotional management: Parents can assist children in developing emotional management skills, such as teaching them how to relax and stay calm, how to express emotions, and how to be mindful of themselves and others.

4. Participate in games or activities: Parents can engage in small games or activities with their children, such as watching movies, exercising together, or doing DIY crafts, allowing children to have more interaction and communication with their parents.

In conclusion, individuals with stable emotion have a higher likelihood of success. Emotionally stable individuals are typically able to understand and harness their emotions to achieve their goals. They are more likely to remain calm and stable. When faced with challenges and difficulties, emotionally stable individuals can think clearly and problem-solve more effectively. Additionally, emotionally stable individuals enjoy harmonious and successful relationships with others. They can establish good interpersonal connections and receive more support and assistance. All of these factors have a positive impact on personal life and career success.
