by Yang Ming High School Director Of Academic Affairs Hu Chieh-ming

Starting on 2021 academic year, high school curriculum is designed according to the new Curriculum Guidelines. Below is the FAQ on curriculum features:

Q1. In 10th grade there are School Required Courses, and Diverse Elective Courses for students. What classes are offered by the courses?
School Required Courses are classes that met the vision and development of the school. These classes are mainly special topics courses, hands-on classes (laboratory classes), and interdisciplinary classes. The purpose of these courses is to strengthen students’ comprehension, and how to apply the knowledge they learned in day-to-day life. e.g., English Composition, Community Service, Essay Study, Topical Exploration, etc.
Diverse Elective Courses are classes opened by each schools according to students’ interests, aptitude, abilities, and needs. Each school will provide at least 6 credits worth of classes for students to choose. Diverse Elective Courses include Second Language, Liberal Education, Experience Exploration, etc.

Q2. High school students used to select their academic discipline groups when they are advancing to 11th grade. Group I consist of liberal arts students, Group II of engineering, and Group III of medical science. Do students still get separated into their discipline groups?
Currently, all high school’s 3-year curriculum plans are set up based on college discipline clusters. Several similar academic discipline groups are combined to form a class group. For example, a class group consists of students aiming to study in finance and business management clusters, the class curriculum will be designed according to that goal. And for a class group consists of students aiming to study in engineering, mathematics and chemistry, and information clusters, their class curriculum will be designed according to that goal. Each schools have different names for the class groups, and class groups are adjusted according to each school’s strength. Course proposals are published on school websites. If you are interested, you’re more than welcome to review the proposals.

Q3. How are college discipline clusters grouped?
College departments are separated into 18 discipline clusters, which are finance, business management, engineering, mathematics and chemistry, information, medicine and health, life sciences, biological resources, Earth and environment, architectural design, art, social psychology, mass communication, foreign languages, history and philosophy, education, law and politics, and recreation and sports. The 10th grade Career Education Class will introduce the 18 discipline clusters listed above.
