Experimental education in Taiwan is categorized into three categories: school-based experimental education, public school commissioned private education, non-school-based experimental education. Homeschooling is considered as a type of non-school-based experimental education. Common reasons to apply for homeschooling are the following:
1. Parents and children are not satisfied with existing education system and prefer to plan their own class subjects and progress.
2. Children facing significant learning difficulties in school settings, resulting in the children fear learning or refusing to go to school.
3. Children have physical or mental disabilities.
If you are interested in applying for homeschooling, the application time is every year between April 30 and October 31. Parents can visit Taipei Department of Education website and download the application. Homeschooling plan template is provided on the website for reference. Group activities, team work experiences, interpersonal relationships traditionally provided in school-based education are fields that homeschooling programs should focus on supplementing. There are written articles by homeschooling parents sharing their experiences, I strongly recommend parents search for the articles. Furthermore, students can transfer to an elementary school, or a middle school to continue education in the public school system after completed the one-year homeschooling program.
Homeschooling is not for every child or family. Different children have different personalities, learning needs, and family background, parents must carefully evaluate whether their children is suitable for homeschooling or not, and if the family is fully supportive of the program. Regardless if a student is in a homeschooling program or not, online learning platforms, such as Taipei CooC-Cloud, the Adaptive Learning website commissioned by the Ministry of Education, and Junyi Academy created by a private foundation have developed many courses for students to learn from home.
