Junior high school advancement: vocational high school, and five-year junior college program by Yang Ming High School Director Of Academic Affairs Hu Chieh-ming

After the 2021 Comprehensive Assessment Program for Junior High School, students that are looking to enroll in a vocational high school, or a five-year junior college program should first learn the differences of these two types of schools. Parents that are making the decision for their children should consider each child’s interests and future development to make the best choice!

1. Vocational high schools in Taipei:
Vocational schools offer 92 majors in 15 different fields, including mechanical engineering,  power mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, business and management, electrical and electronics engineering, designing, agronomy, civil engineering and architecture, arts, culinary and hospitality, maritime, home economics, aquaculture, food processing, and linguistics. After finishing the three year program, students can apply for science and technology universities via the vocational stars program, admission by recommendation and screening, and the special achievement and screening-based admission. Students can also apply to take the entrance exam for regular colleges.
There are 8 public vocational high schools, which are Song Shan High School Commerce and Home Economics, Songshan High School of Agriculture and Industry, Taipei Municipal Daan Vocational High School, Muzha Vocational High School, Nangang Senior High School, National Taiwan College of Performing Arts (vocational high school department), Taipei Municipal Neihu Senior High School, and Shilin High School of Commerce.
There are 10 private vocational high schools, which are Hujiang Senior High School, Yu Dah High School of Commerce and Home Economics, Dongfang High School of Industry and Commerce, George Vocational High School of Taipei, Kainan Vocational High School, Daojiang High School of Nursing and Home Economics, Daojiang High School of Commerce, Taipei Hwa Kang Arts School, Tun-Hsu Technical High School, and Kai Ping Culinary School.

2. Five-year junior college in Northern Region (including schools in Taipei City, New Taipei City and Keelung City):
The biggest difference between five-year junior college and vocation school are the nursing, and industrial management majors that are available in the five-year junior college. Five-year junior college provides unique five-year program that not only provides theoretical studies, but places even more importance on internship, experiments, hands-on practices, and topical studies. After the 5-year program is completed, students can apply for the two-year technical program or transfer to a college. There are a variety of advancement channels for the students.  Five-year junior college is a diverse and flexible program. In this program, students get to experience workplaces early on, there’s less academic pressure, and there are many channels to higher education.
Two public five-year junior colleges in the northern region are the National Taipei University of Business, and the National Taipei University of Technology; There are 12 private five-year junior colleges in the northern region schools, which are St. John's University, Taipei City University of Science and Technology, Hsing Wu University, Hwa Hsia University of Technology, Chihlee University of Technology, Hungkuo Delin University of Technology, Lee-Ming Institute of Technology, Ching Kuo Institute of Management and Health, Taipei University of Marine Technology, Mackay Junior College of Medicine and Nursing, Cardinal Tien Junior College of Healthcare and Management, and the University of Kang Ning Taipei Campus.
